Course Content

This course covers the core issues and aspirations of the adult education sciences which are explored by way of a social and historical introduction from a historical, sociological and research-innovative angle. The course adopts both a historicising as well as a sociological approach. Combined, they present agogics as a veritable urban science which is seeking to provide answers to the question as to how city dwellers should behave in terms of lifestyle, working life and knowledge (3 w's).
A social map of the agogical sector is indispensable for this first bachelor year, as is an introduction to case work, management and policy (3 b's). This serves to offer students a clear insight into the set of duties of the modern-day agogue (the practical professional worker).

This course includes an individual assignment (reflection paper) and a group assignment. Students will get acquainted in small groups (3-4 students) with the field and with central agogical themes. Each student group works independently with an organization or local actor and Brussels is considered as a living lab. If necessary, an online alternative will be provided.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Grades of students for the group assignment can vary between students. The individual grade depends on a peer-evaluation of the individual engagement.

In order to pass, students need to obtain a 10/20 on both the final examination and the assignment. When a student does not obtain 10/20 on one of the examination components, this component has to be retaken during the second examination period. In the second examination period, the group assignment will be replaced by an individual paper.
