Course Content
Inorganic chemistry
horizontal and vertical trends in the periodic system.
1. kwantummechanical basis of the periodic system
2. vertical trends (associated to isolated atoms, and to chemical properties of atoms and moleculen)
3. horizontal en diagonal trends (variations in chemical properties, ion-covalent step, oxides, hydrides, catenation)
4. isoelectronic and isostoichiometric relations
5. Characterisation methods: XRD, AAS, ionchromatography

The students have to read and understand one chapter of a general chemistry book. They have to make the links with the theory of this and other chemistry courses.

During the practical sessions the analytical chemistry will be handled.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

this advanced course is intended to give an overview of the complex behavior of all elements of the periodic system. Vertical, horizontal as well as diagonal trends are studied. The most important characterization techniques (NMR, XRD, AAS) need to be known.
By discussing examples of the own research (problem, experimental results, discussion) a training in academic research is given. English and French is taught via the textbooks and the practical work in collaboration with ULB.

Generally:
The students need to be able to understand (and retrieve) the literature in this field.
The most important characterization techniques need to be known. For part of the exam, the students have to study and present a chapter of a book.

The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has a broad fundamental knowledge and understanding of

1. scientific principles and methodology of exact sciences with the specificity of their application to engineering;

The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences can

7. apply quantitative methods and computer software relevant to the engineering discipline in order to solve engineering problems;

11. present and defend results in a scientifically sound way, using contemporary communication tools;

The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has

18. acquired the tools for knowledge collection towards life-long learning.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 33% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 34% of the final mark.
PRAC Report determines 33% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • oral exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 33% of the final mark.

    Note: 1/3de van de punten: een mondeling examen over de volledige leerstof, WPO inbegrepen.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • report and presentation with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 34% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • reports practicals with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 33% of the final mark.

    Note: Voor WPO: verslagen 1/3de van de punten.

Additional info regarding evaluation

the exam consists of 3 parts:
-for WPO: reports of the practical sessions 1/3th of quote
-for HOC: 1/3th of quote: studying and presenting a chapter of a book, related to the theory. Also a written report on this subject needs to be handed in.
1/3th of quote: an oral exam about the complete course, including practical sessions.
An absence for one of the parts of the exam leads to a quote of 0 for the complete course.

Except for the WPO, no partial score liberations are granted from one one exam period to another nor from one year to another.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
