Lectures:
This course discusses some topics in industrial measurement and control systems. The course concentrates on the usage of PLC's for automation and control. A selection of the topics can be found below
- Evolution and advantages of automated systems in industrial measurements and control
- Industrial control via PLC, applied on ladder programming in a Simatic environment
- The basics of PLC programming: understanding and bulding ladder programs
- The use of PLC's is more advanced applications such as PID control and dynamic movement control
- Overview of industrial monotoring/ distributed control systems based on Ethernet, CAN, Fieldbus and PROFINET
The lectures also provide hands-on experience where we realize a number of smaller ladder programs during the sessions. The software that is used in these lectures is the TIA portal software of Siemens. Each student will get a license of this package for the duration of the course.
Labs:
- In the labs you will build a PLC programming project for the automation of one of the test setups that are provided. This allows to test the code in a real hardware environment.
- The project is prepared and simulated in advance by the student in the Siemens environment and is then tested on the real hardware. The project is then submitted before the deadline.

-
General competencies
The student is capable to:
- Understand and explain a communication standard that is similar to the ones discussed during the course
- Understand, explain and design a simple instrumentation control software
- Understand, explain and design a simple PLC steering
- Grading
-
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
- Oral exam open book
with a relative weight of 1
which comprises 100% of the final mark.
Note: Open book.
- Additional info regarding evaluation
The course evaluation consists in an open book oral evaluation of the project and the theory. The evaluation is open book. The student has to show the necessary understanding of the project and the concepts in the course.
- Allowed unsatisfactory mark
- The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
