Attendance of the WPO classes is mandatory. Students with more than 25% unexcusable absences are not allowed to participate in the written exam. The student can bring an official testimonial to the lecturer to excuse for an absence or send an excuse e-mail to inform about exceptional circumstances.
This course is meant for students starting a study program at the Faculty of Science and Bio-Engineering Sciences and having a weaker background in mathematics. The aim of the course is to give the students the necessary mathematical knowledge and competences to start the mathematics courses in their Bachelor program.
The mathematical content in this course remains within the boundaries of secondary school mathematics as set by the Flemish government. In this course students also get used to an academic level of teaching and to scientific formalism.
The students are guided towards the acquirement of an appropriate study method needed for an academic study in science. Attention is paid to the linguistically and scientifically correct formulation of reasoning and deduction and to mathematical models in science.
The emphasis in this course is on the understanding and mastering of basic mathematics concepts and their use. The student is expected to develop the abilities of applying the mathematical properties in real situations and of solving problems and making exercises.
This course uses teaching methods that activate students and motivate them to study in a self-guided manner.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Other determines 20% of the final mark.

The course consists of 2 parts, part 1 consists of items 1 through 4 of the content, part 2 consists out of part 5.
In the course of the semester permanent evaluation (online Canvas tests as part of the StudyGPS) determines 20% of the final score.
There will be a written exam in January, consisting out of 2 parts corresponding to the 2 parts of the course. Part 1 of the exam determines 60% of the final score for the course, part 2 determines 20% of the final score for the course.
In the middle of the first semester a written partial evaluation takes place. This partial evaluation concerns part 1 of the course. Participation in the partial evaluation is mandatory, in case of unexcused abscense the student will not be allowed to take the final exam. For students who earn a score of 12/20 or higher this score is transferred to part 1 of the written examen in January and they are not allow to take part in this part of the exam. The student can repudiate this score on the partial evaluation by sending an email to the teacher before the end of the last regular teaching week of the first semester. In this case the score earned on the partial evaluation is voided and the student is allowed to partake in part 1 of the exam.
In the second exam period the result of the permanent evaluation is transferred from the first semester, the permanent evaluation cannot be retaken in the second exam period. Both scores on part 1 and part 2 of the exam in the first exam period are voided and for both parts the exam has to be retaken in the second exam period.
