Course Content

The lectures deal with the general background in building construction and building materials. In a first part, various construction methods are discussed: frame construction, prefabrication, massive construction. The second part goes into the properties and fabrication process of materials applied in construction. The third part goes into massive construction. Construction details in masonry and concrete are analysed: foundation, wall, floor, flat and green roof, door and window openings.

The exercises aim to enhance the competence of students in technical drawing and consulting material data bases. The (obligatory) practical sessions go into the graphical conventions, classification of documentation in construction and the analysis of simple loadbearing structures. The students draw construction details on a scale 1/20 to 1/5.

Within the context of the integrated design project, the student technically details its architectural concept. To link theory with practical experience a guided tour is organized to a factory in building construction materials or a building site.
