Course Content
Through lectures and individual supervision the students are accustomed to basic terms such as form, space, structure, context, etc. There is interaction with the research topic ‘4D Design’, by which a sustainable design approach is promoted, with ‘adaptability’ as a key element. The following aspects are treated:

A) Architectural aspects

1. Structural and technical aspects (tectonics)

2. Form and space and their existential meaning

3. The functional and ergonomic dimensions

4. Context and building physics

B) Supporting skills

1. Drawing techniques

2. Perspective drawing

3. Graphical semiotics

4. Model building

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 10% of the final mark.
Other determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • eindopdracht SEM1 with a relative weight of 24 which comprises 30% of the final mark.
  • eindopdracht SEM2 with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • opdrachting tekenen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • evolutie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation
A design assigment with reduced complexity is analysed and interpreted by the students and an entry level design is expected which satisfies a basic set of given requirements. By doing so, the analytic ability and the ability to reflect in a critical manner is being evaluated. Through individual supervision sessions the student is challenged to develop his own vision and to stay critical of his own design. Graphical and verbal communication skills are explicitly evaluated by means of a clear portfolio and verbal defense. Through intermediate evaluations the evolution and process of the student is also evaluated. Specific attention is given to the integration of supporting courses (see description of end competences).

Receiving a score for the course 'Design studio: man and adaptability' implies participation in all assignments and jury's throughout the year. Failing to participate in one of these assignments results in the inability to obtain a score for this course.

Final score is calculated as follows:

Assignments Drawing 10%

Assignments first semester 30%

Assignments second semester 50%

Evolution 10%
Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
