Course Content

Theory :
On the hand of prominent buildings of the 20e century architectural history en of the actual building production, the student is introduced in the method of working, the methodologies and the design process of the concerning architect.
The methodologies are transmitted by text and image related to the fundamental design with both a specific professional knowledge and a large socio-cultural context.
Critical confrontations are organised between projects concerning the design, the material, the environment, the detailing, ... where it is most important that the student learns to look with professionalism, that means with a critical and searching view.


Studio work :
Learning to design a building and its morphology, with sense for economy of material and conceptual resources and for a flexible use of spaces ;
a simple, functional, technical and an optimal ergonomic plan-concept ;
a sophisticated outer wall composition ;
the graphic design of a architectural composition ;
intelligent, innovating and flexible management of simple programs (aims, requirements, objectives) ;
developing appropriate representation techniques.
The contents of the courses Design Methodology I, Morphology I, History of Architecture I, Building Technology I ... .

Additional info
Students can not subscribe to the course Design Studio: Habitat and Heritage if they have to complete a course from the first Bachelor (IST-programme) that conflicts with the time schedule of course Design Studio: Habitat and Heritage. Each lesson, an indicative bibliography will be reported

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
LEC Practical Assignment determines 10% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 35% of the final mark.
Other determines 55% of the final mark.

Within the LEC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Dagelijks werk, evolutie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oefening 1 with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oefening 2 with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 55% of the final mark.
