3 ECTS credits
85 u studietijd
Aanbieding 1 met studiegidsnummer 4016399ENR voor alle studenten in het 1e semester met een verdiepend master niveau.
The course aims to teach the basics of the mechanics of composite materials.
The introduction will position composites in the total scope of structural materials, both from a market and materials properties perspective. Further basic raw materials will be reviewed and the various composites manufacturing methods with their main applications.
Subsequently the elastic behavior of composites will be analyzed on 3 different levels : microscopically at the fiber-matrix level, macroscopically at the ply level and the full composite level with classical lamination theory. Next will be the failure modes and strength predictions, again at the various levels.
A number of real engineering calculations and their applicable codes, will be reviewed together with the students in a broad variety of end use markets, but still with special attention to building and construction, including a full composite passive house. The various options to connect composites will be discussed.
In the final seminars we will discuss all the other material properties that are vital to the successful application of composites with examples of each. Environmental aspects will be included.
In the practicums we will visit a composites manufacturing plant, test composites and calculate composites.
Digital course material will be uploaded on Poincarré.
Handbook (optional) : Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials, Ishai & Daniel (ISBN 978-0195150971)
The course has a double objective :
· Teach the basics of mechanical behavior to calculate elastic properties of composite materials and predict failure
· Provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of composite materials to allow the student to start developing successful engineering applications of composites
Moreover, with 30 years of industrial experience in the sales, development and production of composites, business aspects will always be present in the course.
