Course Content

The students work in small groups (4-8 students) on a project closely related to a theme within the research unit SBB, centered around a single protein or a protein pair. All themes are on the interface between structural biology, biochemistry and biophysics. First, recombinant proteins are expressed and purified to homogeneity via different chromatographic techniques. Next, these proteins are studied using a variety of biochemical and biophysical methods (for example but not exclusive calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, microscale thermophoresis, fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism, X-ray crystallography, NMR, ... ). The results are presented in a written joint report and orally to the supervisors and peers.

Course material
Practical course material (Required) : Uitgeschreven labotext en protocols
Additional info

Lab text and protocols will be made available.

Participation to the practicals is obligatory. Repeating the wet lab sessions in the same academic year is not possible.

Unjustified absence on the practical sessions leads to substraction of 3 points on the global exam result, per missed practical session. Unjustified absence on more than half of the practical sessions leads to 0/20.

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

- The students have a practical knowledge about and skills in a number of important techniques in the fields of biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology

- The students are able to interpret and integrate the results of biochemical and biophysical experiments

- The students are able to generate a written report on the results of biochemical and biophysical experiments under the form of scientific paper

- The students are able to orally report their results under the form of a scientific presentation

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Practical Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • groepscijfer + peer ass. with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Note: groepspunt gebaseerd op werk in labo, groepsverslag en presentatie, en individueel gecorrigeerd via peer assessment
  • individueel cijfer with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Note: individueel punt gebaseerd op werk in labo en presentatie

Additional info regarding evaluation

The students are evaluated on three criteria:

- the quality of their participation in the practical work

- an oral presentation of their work before a public and posing critical questions on the other projects

- a detailed group report written under the form of a scientific paper

The global score contains:

- an individual grade starting from a common mark proposed by the supervisor and corrected via peer assessment, based on practical work, report and oral presentation

- an individual grade based on the practical work and oral presentation

Unjustified absence on the practical sessions leads to substraction of 3 points on the global exam result, per missed practical session. Unjustified absence on more than half of the practical sessions leads to 0/20.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
