Course Content

The following topics are discussed in the first part (experimental stress analysis): what can be measured – when – where – how, displacement measurement devices, strain measurements: strain gages, photo-elasticity, Moiré and recent full field optical measurement techniques (Digital Image Correlation, ESPI and Shearography).

The second part (NDT) will give an overview of the most important NDT-techniques like visual inspection, ultrasonic inspection, acoustic emission, thermography and X-rays.

The students will be asked to study in detail an advanced topic related to experimental mechanics or related to NDT in civil engineering. They also have to present their results. During the laboratory work most of the available techniques will be used on a real civil engineering structure.
