Offer 1 with catalog number 4017426ENR for all students in the 1st semester of even academic years (e.g. 2012-2013) at a (E) Master - advanced level.
Building on a basic knowledge of immunology and cell biology, the course will go deeper into immunology, with an important emphasis on cell biological aspects. Cellular processes such as phagocytosis, antigen processing, costimulation and signal transduction will be dealt with in the context of topics including comparative immunology, innate and adaptive immunity, B and T cell biology and tolerance. Case studies on diseases such as asthma and cancer will also be included.
Participation to the practicals is compulsory. This entails both the participation to the laboratory sessions and the preparation of the practicals report.
Unjustified absence at one or more of the practical sessions will result in a loss of 1 point on the end score of the course per day of absence. In case of longer, justifiied absence, an alternative task may be provided by the lecturers if this is possible.
The course aims at providing you a thorough understanding of immunological processes and their implications and applications in human health.
In this course:
1) You acquire a profound theoretical and application-oriented knowledge and understanding of the way the immune system functions in living organisms and what are the underlying cellular and molecular-biological processes.
2) You acquire knowledge and understanding of advanced techniques and results in the field of immunology and are aware of how these techniques and results are applied in research and medicine.
During the practicals:
1) You acquire practical skills in the domain of applied immunology.
2) You acquire the ability to retrieve, critically evaluate and use scientific information.
3) You acquire the ability to operate as a member of a team and to present personal research, thoughts, ideas and opinions.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Oral examination (30 minutes) with written preparation (30 minutes).
For the practicals, there is a formative evaluation in the form of a written report with feedback.
