Within this internship the student gets acquainted with different aspects of physical activity, fitness and health. There are 5 mandatory items in which the student has the possibility to make choices in function of his or her interests. These choices need approval of the teaching staff.

Mandatory items:

1) groups assignment focussing on anatomy and range of movement possibilities applied in a fitness setting.

2) A total of 15 hours is allotted to observation in the following fitness settings: (1) a fitness centre with adequate counselling and guidance; (2) a fitness centre without counselling and guidance (3) personal training. Within this task the following aspects need to be analysed and discussed critically: training purpose of the subjects; type of exercise, scheme of the training, quality of the exercise, quality of the counselling/guidance

3)  A total of 40 hours is allotted to the recruitment and guidance of 2 novice fitness practitioners. This is organised together with the Sport service of the VUB (Mr Dirk Van De Wiele). After an info session the students need to recruit possible 'clients' amongst the VUB staff or students. After the intake session and the analysis of the starting situation the students propose a training program which can be applied after control by the teaching staff. The students provides different contact moments and makes a report concerning the different aspects of his activities with the subject (aim of the training, specific aspects of the program, progress, problems…). A sufficiently long period should be covered, in order to allow evaluation of improvements made.

4)     A total of 5 hours is allotted to extra muros lessons, symposia, scientific congresses within the broad domain of physical activity, fitness, health and nutrition.

5) For at least 50 hours, the student is allowed to opt for a specific domain for further specialisation such as fitness classes, personal training, physical coaching, health promotion, etc. Choices need to be approved by the teaching team.

The student makes a dossier with an objective (data, hours, programs, testings…) and a subjective part (strength and weaknesses). A report (on a specially designed form) of the supervisor of the specific internship location is asked.
