Part I: Rock mechanics
Physical properties of rocks
Strength and deformability of intact rocks
Discontinuities
Strength and deformability of rock masses
In-situ stress state
Rock slope stability
Part II: Underground constructions
Excavation methods
Support systems
Design
Surface settlements
Engineering geological issues
Copies of the slides provided on Pointcarré/UV
A field visit day should be organized according to the possibilities.
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
- describe the basic concepts of rock mechanics
- characterize the main properties of rock mass
- explain how the rock behaviour influences some rock engineering applications (tunnels, etc.)
- design a tunnel lining and propose a tunnel excavation method
- calculate the stability of a rock slope and propose solutions to ensure the stability
