Part 1:

In the first part of the first semester the students receive an introduction to research methodology by means of lectures and interactive classes. The following topics are discussed: introduction to research methodology; literature review; research design; qualitative research; case studies; quantitative research: measurement scales and questionnaires; validity; reliability; sampling; experiments; reporting.

Part 2:

During the second semester we go in group through the process of writing a literature review and drafting a research design. There is a weekly seminar and students are expected to prepare for the next seminar, without formal deadlines. We foresee an intermediate submission of the paper for feedback to the promotor and the final version of the paper is submitted at the end of the semester for final assessment by the promoter.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Part 1 _ written exam

There is a partial evaluation after the 6 lectures in the first semester; participation in this exam is mandatory.

Students must obtain at least 10/20 to continue this course in the second semester.

The evaluation of the first part is a summative written evaluation with closed questions (multiple-choice questions). The midterm exam contains questions about terminology, insight in the content and reporting. For students with a valid attestation of absence an exam in the first semester is organized.

The written exam cannot be retaken in the second session.

Part 2 _ paper

The evaluation of the second part is based on the paper and is summative. The evaluation is based on a rubric to guarantee the consistency among the promoters and to support the formative character of the feedback.

We organize one feedback session after each session. This is the only moment to receive feedback on the exam of that session. Registration for the feedback session on Canvas is mandatory.

If a student does not pass for the first part (exam), the student cannot submit a paper in first session and cannot submit a paper in the second session. The student receives a zero score for the paper.

If a student was allowed to participate in the second part, but did not pass for the second part (paper), the student can resubmit a revised version of the paper in the second session.

Grades on both parts can be transferred across the exam sessions of the same academic year.
