Course Content

This module provides an introduction to the disciplines, methodologies, problems and themes that may be encountered by those undertaking research work in the field of ancient history. The topics covered range from historiography, papyrology, numismatics and epigraphy to general issues of method in ancient history.

Additional info

During this course the student deals with the specific characteristics of the primary sources for the Greek and Roman Antiquity and with the skills required to use these sources. Moreover, the student gains insight into the modern debates by reading modern literature on specific topics within ancient history and (s)he is able to analyse the arguments in modern debates and to formulate independently an opinion on the various positions in these academic debates.

Objectives

The objective is that students doing research in the field of ancient history should be equipped with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to develop a research project and pursue it successfully.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen schriftelijk with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Opdrachten hulpwetenschappen with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student will be examined on the two crucial pillars of the ancient historian's craft: knowledge and skills. Knowledge will be examined in the form of a written exam. The skills acquired during the course are examined through written and oral assignments.
