Course Content

The goal of the Seminar Methods of Art Science is to practice fundamental scientific skills within the art sciences. The seminar is divided into two parts. The first part practices perceptive qualities which are essential for a high quality scientific art practice. The exercises during the lessons will be primarily focused on iconography and formal characteristics. The difficulty and complexity will gradually rise with the exercises.

In the second part of the seminar, students will go through all phases of an art scientific research. Building on the knowledge and skills from the Seminar Art Sciences and Archeology students will independently conduct research of a specific art work. The heuristics will look for both primary and secondary sources. The research that is about the critical status questionis and the extended analysis of the art work will result in a first scientific article.

During regular moments of contact during the seminar and permanent availability by email, students get the chance to report about their scientific findings and activities.
