-the students are oriented in the field of archives and libraries that are relevant to historical research

-the students are introduced to the major historical periodicals

-the students are initiated in the access to collections of libraries and archives, bibliographies and literature overviews, source materials and databases, etc.

-the students practice the use of this material and these institutions for the tracking of literature and sources (with due attention to the specificities of the four great epochs)

-the students learn to process sources

-a general part with a related written assignment is followed by separate parts per epoch, each one being again linked with a particular assignment

-the student has insight in the general heuristics of the historical science and in the particular heuristics of the four large historical epochs, ‘paper’ reference works as well as online instruments, and has knowledge of the main source series

-the student can apply the heuristic principles in the contexts mentioned above (general and epoch specific)

-the student can adequately communicate by writing

-the student can refer correctly, also regarding materials specific to historical research

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Practical Assignment determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

-5 written assignments, each for 20% of the final mark

-non introduction of 1 or more of these assignments ipso facto leads to an final mark “absent”

-for the second session only those assignments have to be (re)made for which a mark “absent” or lower than 10/20 has been registered for the first session
