Aims

With this course we want to improve the quality of the bachelor papers and train the students in academic competences, including theory, formulating research questions and discussing results

This will be done via 5 assignments and modules:

Assignment 1 is based on a number of workshops on paradigms. After a general introduction to the paradigms there will be a class discussion of several articles in seminar form. This results in the first assignment. The student reads a theoretical text in art sciences and archaeology. The texts are then presented in group during class.

Assignment 2. The subject of the bachelor paper is presented in the first collective bachelor thesis presentation session. The presentation takes a maximum of 7 minutes and is mandatory.

Assignment 3 is to discuss the paradigms and to compile a commented literature list. The student searches for and discusses between 10 and 15 sources from at least 3 following paradigms: cultural-historical / nationalistic / descriptive, 5 processual / modernist / structuralist, 5 post-processual / postmodernist / contextual and 1 source that is in line with the Unesco indicators on sustainable development (cf. also complex system theory) within archaeology; formalist / iconographic / iconological studies, radical art science (The New Art History), hermeneutic / semiotic / poststructuralist studies, sociological / anthropological studies, postcolonial and global art history within art sciences. This is followed by a commented literature list - an overview of what researchers have previously written on the topic and/or theme of your paper, along with an exploration of their approaches, sources, methods, debates and theories. The student reports on what is relevant within that literature in view of the research questions. The literature list must be carefully selected based on relevance. The written report contains a maximum of 2000 words.

Assignment 4 This leads to: formulating and justifying the research question, embedded in the literature that has been collected. Embedding in the literature is crucial: what does the student's research contribute to the field, and why is it relevant? The written report may not exceed 1,500 words.

Based on the feedback on the previous assignments and the research progress, the student gives the second oral presentation (Assignment 5) in early spring. The students report on their research (for a maximum of ten minutes), in which the research progress is critically discussed on the basis of the research question, subject/theme, case(s) and methods.

There will also be a presentation on formal aspects of the paper.

TIME PATH

According to the faculty BA regulations, students must have chosen the theme and supervisor before October 30 (to be submitted to the secretariat). For these assignments to take effect, Assignments 1, 2 and 3 must be completed in the first semester, and Assignments 4 and 5 in the second semester. Assignments 2 and 5 are based on the oral presentation of the paper.

Competences:

This course supports and deepens your research approach for your bachelorppaer.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The student has knowledge of the important theoretical and philosophical paradigma's in Art studies and archaeology, knows the authors that represent these and understands their significance.

The student can read and understand theoretical papers and position them in the framework of the known paradigma's.

The student can apply the general sense and understanding of the paradigma's in paper and research.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
LEC Presentation determines 50% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the LEC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • 3 presentaties with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Note: Drie presentaties bepalen 50% van het eindcijfer.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • 2 papers with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Note: Twee papers bepalen 50% van het eindcijfer.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The essays and presentations make out 100% of the end result:

The final grade is based on the following categories:

Exam (Other) makes out 100% of the end result

Within the Exam (Other) category, the following assignments need to be completed

LEC Presentation determines 50% of the final mark.

First presentation is a group assignment on a theoretical paper with a relative weight of 5%. Subsequently, two individual presentations need to be completed. The first presentation with a relative weight of 15 takes place in the first semester. The second presentation with a relative weight of 30 takes place in the second semester. The three presentations comprise 50% of the final mark.

SELF Paper determines 50% of the final mark.

Two papers with a relative weight of 30 and 20 respectively together comprise 50% of the final mark.

The student must have participated in each assignment and must receive a minimum of 7/20 for an assignment in order to pass the entire course.

Re-examination: the student that failed on this course (less than 10 on 20), writes for the re-examination a new essay in which all the assignments are evaluated with a focus on research-questions, theories, methods, approaches, sources, research-problems and results of the bachelorpaper. This essay is between 2000 and 3000 words.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
