This course unit offers an introduction to the history of Western music. Preliminary knowledge of musical concepts is not necessary. There is a great focus on musical theatre and more specifically on the operas of W.A. Mozart. If the Corona measures allow it, three opera performances will be attended in the Koninklijke Muntschouwburg. If this is not possible live, on-line performances will be discussed.
Compositional developments, key genres and representative works are embedded in art and cultural history.
The course text, program brochures of the opera performances of the Royal Opera La Monnaie and listening examples are made available free of cherge via the digital learning platform Canvas. The opera performances are offered at a preferential rate by the Royal Opera La Monnaie at a rate of € 20 per performance.
The student acquires insights into important episodes in the history of Western art music.
The student is able to link musical evolutions to broader art and cultural-historical developments.
The student reflects critically on the emergence and development of musical styles and genres.
The student builds up terminological baggage with which he can describe music in an objective way.
The student is able to formulate nuanced answers to essential music-historical questions

In addition to the written exam, the student must also write a short paper. This paper tests the learning result: 'The student is able to formulate nuanced answers to essential music-historical questions.'
The final result is based on the written exam (70%) and the paper (30%).
