Course Content

The theme of the seminar for the academic year 2020-2021 is 'Status and identity in the Greek world'.
The following trajectory is mandatory for day students: The course consists of two parts. In the first part (the first semester) an introductory course is presented on the various kind of sources for ancient history. Moreover, a survey is presented of the various bibliographic tools available specifically for ancient history. On the basis of this the fulltime students collect modern literature and ancient sources on a topic within the wider theme of 'the city of Rome'.
During the second semester (the second part), each fulltime student will give an individual presentation. In this presentation, a first analysis of the relevant historical information concerning the topic and a research proposal is presented.
The evening students follow a different trajectory: on the first meeting of the seminar information about the bibliographic tools is given and a topic of research (based on the theme 'Status and identity in the Greek world') is assigned to each evening student. Meetings during the first term and start of the second term prepare students for writing their final paper.
The evening students submit their paper at the end of the month of March and present the research results of their paper in an individual presentation in the course of the month of April.
All students are required to give a presentation during the second term. Those students who did not give a presentation and who deliver a revised paper for the 'tweede zit' (i.e. second exam period in July/August) are required to write a second, methodological paper (apart from the paper on their particular research topic) to compensate for the missing presentation.

Additional info

Concerning the fulltime students: Presence and active participation are a condition for the success of the learning process. Active participation will be part of the marks earned. Attendance of the classes is compulsory. In the event a student is absent for more than two meetings (in total during the first and second semester), this will have to be compensated by an additional assignment concerning the theme of the seminar. This assignment has to be completed satisfactorily in order to comply with the minimal requirements of the course.

The presentation is mandatory. Not participating will be compensated by an additional (methodological) assignment.

The students are expected to use modern publications that are available in the libraries of the VUB, ULB and Royal Library. A syllabus containing relevant information about bibliographic tools is available.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The student has the basic skills level with focus on the development of the competency 'independent and critical conducting historical research', more specifically within Classic Antiquity. This means: mastering of heuristic, diagnostic argumentation, as well as oral and written reporting skills.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 50% of the final mark.
PRAC Paper determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Praktijkopdracht with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Werkstuk with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The course represents a learning process. In other words, the required skills and knowledge to conduct historical research and present research results in oral and written form are acquired throughout the course. Nevertheless, all activities are taken into account for the marks earned. 50 % of the marks earned are based on the written paper, the other 50 % on handout, presentation and active participation.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
