We will propose the concept of “aesthetic literacy” to understand what learning of/with film and the performing arts means. This complex idea points to different aspects of arts education: from the decoding of a specific art language to understanding the critical relation of the art form to the broader world. The central question of this course is: “how can we broaden, deepen and improve the aesthetic literacy of cultural participants?”
We focus on three art forms: movies, music and theatre/performance. What do these arts forms tell us about the world? Which language do they use? We also pay attention to concrete initiatives and organizations (within the cultural field) which focus on education in film and the performing arts.
Digital course material (obligatory): powerpoint slides, student notes, texts and articles that accompany a number of classes, via the electronic learning platform Canvas.

- Can relate the concept of “literacy” to the practice and theory of education in film and the performing arts
- Understands how the cultural field of organizations organize the education in film and the performing arts, and understands how they fulfill an educational function;
- Understands how the art forms (film, music, theatre/performance) can give a (critical) perspective) on our society;
- Can analyze the specific language of the arts forms (film, music and theatre/performance) and apply it to other cultural forms;
- Can formulate specific actions relating to a specific art form or initiative that broaden or deepen the “aesthetic literacy” of the participants.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 60% of the final mark.

There will be 4 assignments throughout the semester about each of the different parts (cultural field, movies, music and theatre/performance). At the end of the semester there will be an oral exam, that consists of a presentation and dialogue about a research assignment, and a question about the contents of the course. The evaluation will be further explained in the classes and via Canvas.

Within Exam Oral the student must complete the following assignments:
Oral exam with a weight of 40 and so 40% of the final grade.
Explanation: oral exam (with preparation)
Within the category WPO Practice Assignment the student must complete the following assignments:
Individual assignments with a weight of 60 and so 60% of the final grade.
Explanation: 4 assignments on each of the parts of the course.
To succeed for this category, you will have to get a combined grade on the four assignments that is at least half of the total grade of this part. If you get less than half of the total grade for this part, you will only need to re-submit those assignments in the second exam period for which you did not receive a passing grade.
Absence on at least one of the obligatory exam parts (oral exam and assignments) leads to absence for the complete grade. You must pass for every exam part to pass this course. If you fail for one or more of the parts, you will receive 9/20 or the average score if lower. The partial grades of the different categories for which you succeeded in the first exam period, can be transferred to the second exam period and will thus not have to be resubmitted or retaken.
