Course Content

During this internship, students are able to discover and experience the daily practice of the clinical psychologist. The intern’s task is to observe five activities on the work floor:

1.    Intake interview
2.    Problem analysis (psychodiagnostics)
3.    Intervention: various forms of psychotherapy or psychological counseling
4.    Interview where the psychologist gives advice about the diagnostic process or treatment or the finalization of the diagnostic or therapeutic process
5.    Team meeting

Institutions that are eligible to provide an internship must carry out clinical psychological activities in the clinical (children or adults) field. Students can choose an internship site from our existing list “inventaris stageplaatsen” on Canvas.

We expect from the internship site that (1) there is an accompanying clinical psychologist or remedial educationalist with at least 2 years of professional experience that acts as an internship mentor and (2) gives students the opportunity to observe.

Internships are coordinated and supervised at the VUB by Amelia Peeters, who is present on Mondays, Thursdays and Wednesdays (office 3 C 211A). She can be reached on the telephone number +32 2 629 25 22 and by e-mail: amelia.peeters@vub.be.

The person ultimately responsible for the observation internship is Prof. Dr. Johan Vanderfaeillie.

The student is bound by professional secrecy throughout the period of practical training and must strictly observe the deontological code of the psychologists. This deontological code can be found on the website of the Belgian Federation of Psychologists.

Learning Outcomes

ALGEMENE COMPETENTIES

The aim of the internship:
-    The student independently finds a suitable internship placement and fills in an internship contract that meets the requirements of the appropriate form.
-    Gain insight into the work field of the clinical psychologist, the institution providing the internship and related sectors.
-    Applying the theoretical knowledge and insights from the scientific training as a clinical psychologist in practice.
-    Gain insight into and reflect on one's own functioning and the required competencies with regard to the practice of the profession of clinical psychologist (gain insight into one's own strengths and possible pitfalls; make a well-founded choice for the profession of clinical psychologist).
-    Honour agreements, respect deadlines and communicate appropriately with those involved within the internship.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Internship with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Note: check Additional info about evaluation

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student will be qualitatively evaluated on the following elements (passed or failed):

-    The student is assessed on different competencies during the internship by the internship mentor based on a standard evaluation form. This evaluation form has to be submitted at the latest during the last week of the second semester to the supervisor of the VUB.
-    The reflection report together with proof of attendance (form sigend by the organisation) has to be submitted at the latest during the last week of the second semester to the supervisor of the VUB.
-    Compulsory presence during two seminars (introductory seminar and the deontological code seminar).

The final total is qualitatively assessed by the VUB supervisor and is expressed as passed or failed. If the student does not pass one of these components, the entire course will be assessed as unsuccessful. Partial results can be transferred to exams in August. A negative evaluation by the internship ensures that the student has to perform a new observation internship and submit a new reflection report in August. For the part "attendance seminars" a replacement task is foreseen.
