The course content consists of the following parts: First, some basic concepts from German linguistics are explained. Then there is a deepening of German grammar and an introduction to German phonetics / phonology. The course covers the differences between written and spoken language. The spoken and written academic language skills in German play a central role. This includes giving a presentation and writing an abstract, a summary or a scientific text as well as subject-specific vocabulary exercises.
The text and powerpoint presentations of the lecture are made available via the digital learning platform Canvas and/or via e-mail. The students are expected to also take notes with this study material during the lectures.
The lectures are in German.
The students get to know and understand the basic concepts of linguistics in German. They gain insight into the linguistic analyzes of the morphology and sentence structure of German. In addition, they acquire a basic knowledge of German phonology and of the phonetic script (IPA). The students can also give a linguistic presentation and write a short linguistic text in German.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.

Absence from a compulsory part of the evaluation leads to an absence as the result code for the course unit.
