Course Content

Guest lectures on current legal aspects of European unification.

The course allows to deal with several EU legal aspects.

In the academic year 2021/2022, the following aspects were covered: 'The new economic governance of the European Union' (Petr Blizkovsky; three lectures); 'EU asylum and migration law' (Aniel Pahladsingh); 'Linguistic diversity and the EU internal market' (Stefaan van der Jeught); 'The European Union and sport (law)' (Niels Verborgh), 'Brexit' (Sir Jonathan Faull) and 'Primacy, national identity and the (unbearable lightness of being) constitutional courts' (Luca Prete). Also two recorded guest lectures were offered to the students: 'Brexit and the internal market' (Sir Jonathan Faull) and 'Recent case law of the European Court of Justice in the field of external relations' (Luca Prete).

Additional info

Lectures are given in Dutch, English or French (Belgian and foreign guest speakers).
The students also gather knowledge through self study.
The students are informed, via e-mail, of the content and the learning outcomes of the course (see also the "leerplatform").
Study materials are distributed via the "leerplatform".
Recording (audio-visual) of the lectures is not allowed.
Exam contract: not possible.
One separate contact moment will be organised for the "evening students".

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

At their level, the students must be able to reflect on and to process (in a critical manner), different legal aspects of European unification (interaction in class is, therefore, encouraged).
The students must be able to show that they understand the legal aspects covered (in a critical manner). The students must also be able to express knowledge as a result of self study.
Exam questions are "knowledge questions", but sometimes allow the students to also reflect.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Written Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written exam with open (and possibly closed) questions. The students may use the EU Treaties during the exam. They will be informed beforehand if and which other documents may be used during the exam.

The exam questions depend on the content of the lectures.

Examples of exam questions:

Discuss the legal instruments adopted by the European Union and the Member States of the euro zone following the debt crisis;
Brexit: give and discuss the four concerns, expressed in David Cameron's letter of 10 November 2005, addressed to Donald Tusk.

The students may, at their request (tony.joris@vub.be), inspect the copy of their exam paper within five calendar days after the announcement of the exam results. Within the same period, they may also ask for a clarification of their exam result (see the Teaching and examination regulations).

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
