The student receives a general overview of art and material culture in Western Europe from the Paleolithic up to and including the 20th century. The works of art, objects or other expressions of the material culture are discussed in their respective historical context, however, the course aims in the first place to offer a broad framework in which artists and (art)objects can be situated. Attention will also be paid to the observation, correct description and different methods of interpretation of an artwork.
The student takes lectures notes. The Powerpoint presentations of each class is avaliable on the learning platform Canvas.
Students can recognize a number of artworks (author, title, time, place, style)
Students can organize their observation (space, color, figures, light, texture)
Students can describe an artwork and use the terminology accurately
Students can recognize the different methods of interpretation (style, iconology, gender study, social study)
Students can memorize and explain art historical concepts
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
