Course Content

In this course, students are acquired qualitative and quantitative research design, the difference between both, their possibilities and limitations. Students learn how to develop their research design in function of the problem at stake and research aims. We expect that students have obtained a basic knowledge of methodology in their previous educational programme. The content is seen in seminars:

  • The research problem and objective
  • Development of research question
  • Operationalization of the research
  • Quantitative and qualitative research designs
  • The sample of the selection of the research units
  • Development of questionnaires and assessment of methodological quality
  • Data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, , questionnaires,
  • Quality criteria including validity and reliability for both quantitative and qualitative research
  • Ethical aspects of conducting research

The students are able to develop a research plan with guidance and possess the basic skills for research in the criminological field.

Mission seminar: 100% of the final total

The assignments are completed in group in the seminar.

Students make a number of orders for the quantitative part and the qualitative part. At this they will be assessed. Also a peer assessment will be charged for the final evaluation of the seminar.

Students must participate in the evaluations of the seminars in order to participate in the session.

General Competencies

  • The students can list the main concepts and principles of the methods and techniques of criminological research and apply a criminological scientific research question;
  • The students can formulate a research problem, aim and question (see Problem Formulation) about a criminological relevant research topic;
  • A problem formulation can link to a self-fledged proposal for a feasible research design (see study design);
  • The students can construct / develop a written and oral reflection on the advantages and disadvantages of a research design, according to the stated problem, question and objectives;
  • The students are able to establish quantitative and qualitative research tools (see questionnaires, observation schedules, interview schedules) to critically reflect on the established research tools and data collection;
  • The students work constructively together to research assignments
  • The students establish a scientific, critical and ethical attitude to the day.
  • The students make constructive efforts to contribute to the group assignments.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • PRAC Teamwork with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
