This introductory unit gives an overview of the following topics:
1. What is morality and ethics/moral philosophy? Moral judgments. Four methods and sorts of ethics: normative, descriptive and applied ethics, and meta-ethics.
2. The main historical trends in ethics: Aristotle (virtue ethics), Immanuel Kant (deontological ethics), Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill (consequentialist and utilitarian ethics); Friedrich Nietzsche (moral criticism)
3. Contemporary ethics: existential philosophical ethics (Jean-Paul Sartre), discourse ethics and critical theory of society (Jürgen Habermas), ethics of justice in a pluralistic society (John Rawls), the capabilities approach and human development (Martha Nussbaum), ethics of care (Carol Gilligan).
4. Ethical questions in debates about for example: the moral status of the embryo, abortion, euthanasia, the moral status of animals, ecology, multiculturalism and the media

The student can explain the important theories in ethics/morality philosophy in detail. The student can explain the issues at play in ethical theories. The student can reconstruct ethical theories and explain concepts. The student can apply ethical theories and concepts to moral problems.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Written: reconstruction of an ethical theory; explain ethical concepts; weigh up arguments from an ethical standpoint
