This course offers a thematic and chronological overview of the development of the historical discipline. The central question is how the study of the past has evolved in its current shape. The comparison of a broad range of historical perspectives sharpens students’ perspective on the historical craft. The first part of this course explores the development of historiography from Antiquity to 1980. The second part of this course offers an introduction to non-Western historiographical traditions in the past.

Students know how to:
-name, describe and analyse the development of Western and non-Western historiographical traditions
-define and explain central concepts and figures in Western and non-Western historiographical traditions
-connect and compare the development of Western and non-Western historiographical traditions
