Students who are enrolled in a shortened study program can take this course unit. Registration for this course is only possible for working students. Day students can register for courses whose code ends with an R. At Inschrijven / studentenadministratie@vub.be you must be registered at the VUB as a working student for the current academic year.

Course Content

This course studies the main educational views and educational psychology debates. The school psychological context and especially the functioning of CLBs is set out. The important theme of inclusive education and how this is put into practice in Flemish education is also discussed. Furthermore, a solid background is given concerning the diagnostics of learning disabilities, and the underlying genetic, neurological and cognitive processes of reading ability and dyslexia. Finally, the didactics of normal reading development and the interventions for children with dyslexia are also discussed.

WPO will consist of conducting and reporting a brief diagnostic examination of a child with learning disabilities.

Algemene competenties

Students, after taking this course, will have knowledge and a good understanding of the major educational views and points of discussion in the educational field. They also know the workings of the CLBs, and have a solid background in the field of learning disabilities.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Exercises with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

To pass, the student must have passed both the exam and the total points. If one has not passed the exam, the final grade is the grade for the exam. A passing grade for the exercises can be transferred to the next session.
